My favorite piece from the show, far and away, is the video piece. in Ghent presents an overview of the work of Danish artist Joachim Koester (°1962, Copenhagen), which brings together videos, texts and photography to explore the tangible tension between fact and fiction while adding new layers to already told (hi)stories. Joachim Koester schloss sein Studium 1994 an der Königlich Dänischen Kunstakademie ab. Seine bevorzugten Medien sind Fotografie, Sound und Video. 1997 zeigte Koester auf der documenta X ein Projekt mit dem Titel Day for Night Christiana 1996. Christiana ist der Name einer 1971 gegründeten Hippiekommune. Joachim Koester’s ten photographs depict the villa’s exterior and interior. In one of them the following words can be seen, scribbled onto a wall: ‘Stab your demoniac Smile to my brain Soak me in Cognac and Cocaine!’ For Koester, the building functioned as one of the few monuments in what is largely an invisible history.

For Koester, the building functioned as one of the few monuments in what is largely an invisible history. The film Message From Andrée is based on photographs by Nils Strindberg, one of three explorers who died in a failed attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon in the summer of 1897. For his film, Message from Andrée, Danish artist Joachim Koester photographed the negatives filled with black stains, scratches, and streaks of light; those often ignored by historians. The film evokes memories of the tragically optimistic explorers, the forces of time and severe weather conditions physically acting on the film, and the power of photography to reveal otherwise lost moments.
